Noted Reformed theologian John Murray once wrote that the believer's union with Christ is the "central truth of the whole doctrine of salvation." Without that vital union, there is no Gospel. Once found "in Adam" and therefore alienated from the life of God, the believer is now found "in Christ," and completely and forever justified by an external righteousness not his own. No longer need he fear judgment and eternal punishment, for the penalty for his sin has been completely satisfied by Another, and "in Christ" he enjoys full peace and fellowship with God. Even death itself is robbed of its terrors and transformed into a blessing, for "blessed are the dead who die in the Lord."
